  • Creative and practical – they are very imaginative when it comes to practical things, mechanics and crafts.

  • Know how to prioritize – this flexibility comes with some unpredictability, but they know what's important.

  • Great in a crisis – they usually enjoy a little physical risk, and aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty.

  • Relaxed – they live in the moment and go with the flow, not worrying too much about the future.

  • Stubborn  - they become irritated if someone tries to control them.

  • Insensitive – they fail to interact with others with empathy and emotional sensitivity.

ISTPs as Children and Students

  • Seems quiet and serious

  • Self-contained and even-tempered

  • Generally reserved in the public and stick close to their parents

  • Do not like to be cuddled or held a lot

  • Content to play alone

  • Don’t tend to be verbal or expressive

  • On the move, interested in exploring and touching every inch of their world

  • Tend to be more open to new things than new people 

  • Fidgety, happiest when they aren’t restrained and are allowed to freely explore their immediate environment

  • Often surprise their parents with their physical strength and stamina, early to walk and stand

  • Prefer playing with materials that engage their senses ( sandbox and water)

  • Like fine motor activities and small realistic toys and outdoor active play in nature

  • Excellent mimics- good at imitating facial expressions or body movements

  • Have great memory for sensory details , good at memorizing stories or songs

  • Need to learn by doing and don’t understand a concept until they can test it

  • Willing to do as they are asked, once they understand the rule and the reasons behind it

  • A bit disconnected from the emotional side of their personalities and appear unaffected by the emotions of others

  • Very private about their sad or hurt feelings

  • Have an amazingly high threshold for physical pain

  • Wonderful time to be self-directing and to pursue their own interests

  • School may be difficult because of its many rules and requirements

  • Prefer working alone to group learning activities

  • Tend to be more motivated when the activity is self-directed

  • Like sports, like the sensation of moving and pushing themselves

  • Like building models

  • Often have a hard time sitting still for extended periods of time

  • Like hands-on learning, experiments, explorations and field trips

  • Want to apply what they have learnt in real life

  • Hate theoretical discussions and abstract concepts

  • Good at math and science

  • Hate reading and language arts

  • Want to feel competent, will feel bad when they made mistakes, and will need a lot of time alone b4 they are willing to share their reactions with someone they trust

  • Highly selective in what they participate in, do not do well when not interested, but surprise others with their skill and proficiency when they are motivated

  • Continue to enjoy playing alone

  • Remain selective about their friends and the number of activities they wish to engage in

  • Great observers of nature, most content when they are in nature

  • Notice and remember details of things they have experienced and have excellent visual recall

  • Have a good sense of colour and style

  • Females hate typical feminine games and clothing

  • Often very busy with their many interests and involvement in sports and extracurricular activities

  • The more action and physical risk involved, the more they like it

  • Do well in math but struggle with conceptual math like calculus

  • Have trouble with abstract assignments

  • Rely in their own internal standards rather than pleasing others

  • Want to be competent, hate failure

  • Often baffled when things go badly and become frustrated when they can’t understand logically what went wrong and how to fix it

  • Resourceful and capable of adapting to any situation

  • Accept and admire their independence, logic and resourcefulness

  • Encourage them to feel strong and sure about themselves

  • Help them to make distinction between reasonable risk taking and outrageous or dangerous choices

  • Teach them how to handle their emotions and to deal with relationships

  • Remember that life is difficult for female ISTPs

  • Need help developing their interpersonal skills
